Advice

The NSW SES advises people in the following area(s) to STAY INFORMED about a potential Tsunami threat that may exist:

  • Kingston, Norfolk Island
  • Port Kembla, NSW
  • Spring Bay, Tasmania

You should stay informed by monitoring warnings issued by NSW SES on their website and Facebook page, listening to your local ABC radio station, and checking the latest tsunami information from the Bureau of Meteorology online.

What are we expecting?

The Bureau of Meteorology advises there has been report that pilots experienced unusual surge and current movements in and around the port area. Both in the harbour and in the approaches to the harbour over a prolonged period of time.

This had significant effect on ship movements through the harbour which was managed by prudent tug use. This event is similar to but more drawn out and confused than the Chilean Tsunami of February last year where we experienced a surge approximately 2 days after the earthquake.

What you need to do:

  • If you have a Home/Business Emergency Plan, review it now. Otherwise, have a conversation and plan for what you will do and take with you if you need to evacuate.
  • Obey all signs about beach and foreshore closures and instructions from emergency services.
  • Share this information with family, friends and neighbours and help others prepare where possible.
  • Farmers should consider moving pumps and farm equipment to higher ground.
  • Companion animals and livestock should be relocated to higher ground.
  • The safest option is to evacuate as early as possible to avoid additional hazards. Do not wait till the last minute.
